What Does Sunnah Mean?
DEFINITION
Sunnah refers to a "way" that a person follows and can mean different things depending on the context in which it used.
'Sunnah' is generally used to describe the teachings and narrations of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). It can also refer to the "way of Allah" as Allah states in the Qur'an:
[This is] the sunnah (established way) of Allah with those [prophets] who have passed on before. And ever is the command of Allah a destiny decreed.Qur'an, Chapter 33, Verse 38
The word sunnah can also refer to the opposite of fard, an act of worship that is obligatory. A sunnah act of worship is one that is not obligatory, however it can refer to highly recommended acts of worship that bring you closer to Allah.
As you can see, the word 'sunnah' can have different meanings depending on the context.
